yup. these two fools with shells in a public place.

this is a really dumb idea as they probably don't know if they're live or not.
i'd expect they are live as the tips of the shells are intact.

discuss stupidity of these individuals.

for some reason, i cannot post the link in full because it's apparently some referral link (which it's not, as it's my local newspaper)

but... tank shells aren't like bombs...

this is like whining about people carrying around bullets that haven't been fired...

*Man carries a tank shell nearby*

"HOLY stuff IT'S GOING TO EXPLODE HOW STUPID ARE THOSE GUYS?! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES"

only in britain!

“Unexploded shells can be very unstable. If they are picked up or dropped, it can set them off.”
I would hope they aren't so volatile that the act of picking them up is enough to set them off, seeing as shells need to be picked up and moved from time to time.

most of the shells are from ww1/2, so it would be very dangerous.

A better question is what the hell they are going to do with them

probably get them deactivated, terrorism, or sticking them in the garden as an extra bit of decoration

sticking them in the garden as an extra bit of decoration
wat

Tank shells aren't THAT unstable, they need to hit something at high velocity to explode, otherwise they'd detonate when they're launched. There's no risk of it blowing up.

Maybe they're old and rusty inside

Maybe they're old and rusty inside
are they rusted on the outside?

At the most the propellant charge would detonate, which wouldn't do too much.

The chance of the actual explosive charge detonating without being fired at a VERY high velocity no matter how old it is is pretty insane

They don't even specify what sort of shell it is, if it's a regular AP or APCR shell then the worst that would happen is the propellant charge would go off, and to do that you'd require more force than can be applied by dropping them, even if it was HE, HEAP, HESH or some other equivalent ammunition type the chances of the explosive charge detonating just from being dropped is highly unlikely and if the shell is rusted then there's probably gaps for the pressure to leak out of in the event the propellant charge does detonate which, in such a situation, is highly unlikely because the charge is probably damp or otherwise inert

Tank shells are designed to take punishment, they line the walls of the tank for gods sake, they're designed so that they don't detonate unless they're supposed to or a shell hits them directly.
