Author Topic: [Log] My Hydroponics Project  (Read 930 times)

So, I'm doing a hydroponics system. I decided to do a log to make this more fun. This cost me roughly about $500 to do, which includes nutrients, etc... The system could of been built cheaper, but because it was my first time I had a few problems.

I plan on doing an indoor one for the winter, which currently has an estimated cost around $1,200.

This starts at about day 5 of being in the system.

Note: Roots are starting to come out the bottom of the 3" net pot. Water level is about half inch inside the pot, seems to be doing good with it.

Note: Roots are also starting to appear out of the 3" net pot on these. Tomatoes will have support added soon.

55 Gallon Reservoir Readings Today:
463ppm (Dropped from 497 yesterday)
PH Level of 6 (Stable for 3 days now)

I have more peppers to add to the system, but I ran out of Hydroton. My order for more will not arrive until Tuesday.

Total: 25 tomatoes, 25 peppers with holes to spare. I will just close them off.

I know, when I tell people they assume weed!

I hear tomatoes and peppers are amazing when grown hydroponically. Hydroponic tomatoes at a store near me cost around $2.99/pound. I calculated I will have roughly $4,550 worth of hydroponic tomatoes if all goes well.

Man, that's a lot of 'hydroponic tomatoes'.

Thanks for the suggestion, Becquerel. I will be sure to try that in my next research shoot!

bisjac and one of his real life friends are builing a greenhouse. they were just debating things like this. if they would just use planters or something complicated to water them.
i think they are going classic manual watering though

It all depends on budget really, hydroponics can be costly. I went through an 8oz bottle of PH down within a week, it runs about $8 per bottle. The rain water raises/lowers the PH level, on top of that you need to change, and flush the system every week or two. I will start buying the gallon of PH down soon, but it's $32 a gallon. Three gallons of nutrients alone costs me $100 for a good brand, I don't like to use cheap stuff as it could end up killing the plants.

If he's doing dirt you may be able to cut out some watering if his moisture control is good enough. When I start my seedlings I start them in a dome, the moisture is always high in it so I rarely need to water them.

I considered doing aquaponics which is cheaper,  but I don't really like the idea of having fish. If Bisjac reads this then I would suggest at least $350 budget for a good 10ft  hydroponics system. I have 10ft x 4 pipes. I would also suggest a single flow system, mine is multi-flow and it's a pain in the ass sometimes.

Update 05/19/2013:
Roots are an inch or two longer in the tomatoes, they are pretty healthy.
No change in peppers.

55 Gallon Reservoir Readings Today:
442ppm (Dropped from 463 yesterday)
PH Level of 6.4 (Slowly changing from rain)

i like were this is going. what tye of hydro are you doing?
