Author Topic: Windows 8 Start menu broken!  (Read 5136 times)

So I was playing Minecraft and my computer told me it was going to shut down in 15 minutes to preform updates. I manually restarted after saving everything and let it do it's thing. Now when I boot it up, it comes to a completely blank start screen. I wasn't sure if this was Microsoft's forget up, so I preformed some virus scans (Windows Defender and Malware Bytes). WD didn't find anything, but MB did. I said I had a few things in the registry. I installed and used a registry fixer earlier in the week to fix a folder that I forgeted because it would not let me use the snipping tool. The registry fixer worked, but it might have left the viruses behind. MB found 8 things, 6 were in the registry.
Here is how my start screen looks and this is the registry cleaners website.

http://www.registryrecycler.com/
That program was suggested from a website telling you how to repair your registry.
This is that referral website's link- http://optimizewindows8.wordpress.com/tag/fix-windows-8-registry-errors/

I can still get to my desktop, but I have to dink around by searching for an image file and open it. That takes me to the desktop with the image file up.

Is anyone else having this problem? Again- I just installed Microsoft updates and this happened.

hmmm

perhaps everything that was on the start menu was removed?

try pinning something to the start menu

I honestly don't know how to do that. When I right click and select "all apps" nothing is showed- just a pure grey screen.

try searching for stuff in search, then pin whatever to start

I haven't found any program that had the option to "pin to start" when I search in the start menu, but I can select "pin to start" on, say, a folder in my documents, but that does not show up on the start menu. I have restarted a few times and it's giving me the same situation every time.

That's why I have my windows 8 customized to my liking, with a windows 7 start menu, and a nice look, nothing forgets up.

I prefer Windows 8 search much more than the Windows 7 search. I used whatever that one program is to make you boot into desktop and use the Windows 7 start menu one time, but it was a trial and I didn't like it.

go search on google to check and see if other people are having this problem

I have searched "latest Windows 8 update" and "Windows 8 tiles gone" but all it gives me is a enormous circle jerk on how to get your Windows 7 start menu back. Thanks, Google.. I found a few articles on how to put the desktop icon back, but they all say to use the "all apps" button, which is also a blank screen for me. I followed the instruction on the article, but it still does not display the icons on my start screen. It shows all the icons in the "%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" folder, but it shows nothing on my start menu.

I guess I'm going to have to use Pokki for now.
EDIT:
Ok something is totally up. I went to start Minecraft (Technic launcher) back up and it tells me that there is no installation! Also, when I went to install Pokki it gave me some stupid error that an installation file (.dll) was not in my user files. I'm not sure if Malware bytes fixed file location problems when it got rid of my registry bugs or what, but now lots of things are broken!
EDIT2: When it type in %appdata% into my destination bar it tells me that the folder is not there, but when I navigate to it manually it's all fine....
EDIT3: Ok, forget the forget, I'm going to back up my data and nuke it back to factory settings. Peace out for now. RIP 10 gig truecrypt file ;-;. I only have a 4 gig flash drive.

Running good as new. It should, because I did a factory reset. It took FOREVER to reset everything. ;-; 5200 RPM HD.

well now I know to ignore windows update for awhile :v

Revert back to the superior operating system while having a shaman chant while you use the machine.
