I think it's because he feels he needs to try harder to please his ever growing fan base. He made a video explaining that he said that as a joke, and it wasn't meant to be taken literally, and he apologized for it. If you watched his videos, some of his videos where he isn't playing games, he tells his fans to not bother others and that he respects all the other youtubers, and he doesn't care about the money, he only does it because he enjoys playing games and entertaining his fans. He actually doesn't like when he's payed to sponsor things.


TL;DR Don't hate on him for trying to make his fans happy. Its quite simple as to ignore his existence, rather than curse it. He's not trying to force you to watch it, no one is. And if someone is, don't blame pewdie himself. He's actually a nice guy, who just enjoys playing video games for the enjoyment of others.
