i think anyone wearing a bright, often-multicolored fursuit is asking to have flaming newspapers thrown at them. Much like any loudspoken group really.

Imagine if a fursuiter at a con got set on fire and ran towards other fursuiters for help, only to set them on fire by being too close on accident.
And they too would run towards other fursuiters for help but the same thing would happen and again and again until all the fursuiters were turned into ashes.
That would be an amusing chain reaction.

For example, I've heard stories of people volunteering at children's hospital and senior living areas in them; the kids/people there love them.
