You can copyright a character, but not a species, because a species is just an idea of "it stands on two legs and has fur and a tail and a shark-like head."

If you make a character rendition of that species, and it is significantly distinguishable from other members of that species, then you can copyright that character.

Example: You can copyright "Mickey mouse" or "Pikachu" but you can't copyright mice

Edit: actually, characters are trademarkable, not copyrightable. And trademarks offer quite a bit less protection than copyrights
