if bitterness is your problem, try something like a sweet white or even a mead
I find that Rosé is generally sweeter than most reds and whites. Less bitter, usually much less dry.
I can't speak for all of the brands of it, by one of my local supermarkets does this rather nice Rosé Lambrusco, which is fairly cheap, but really palatable. I could find myself drinking a bottle or two if I really wanted.
I find cheap wine is often complete trash, better for nothing bar getting drunk, while the more expensive stuff usually has stronger flavours. It's your low-end to mid-tier stuff that's generally nicer.
