Haven't a clue, but if I had to guess I'd say it's for the same reason you can carry around a dozen live fish and bugs in your pocket as well as obliterate rocks with a single shovel whack

Seeing as it takes 10 days minimum for an upgrade to happen (compared to 8 for Nook's Cranny), of course.

EDIT: nevermind, got some misinformation on that.  Takes 7 days minimum to upgrade.  Still no wonder that you haven't upgraded.

I don't have the game yet, but from what I've seen from GameXplain's videos the little kids who run Nook's store are really cute.
