Author Topic: I broke my laptop.  (Read 1862 times)

Mainly, I'm creating this topic for you guys to laugh at me for breaking my laptop, but I have some concerns to express:

1. My laptop broke unexpectedly, the hard drive failed and I can't access it at all.

2. I had a bunch of information (like my bank information) entered on the computer because I didn't have a chance to clear history because I had no idea it'd crash.

3. I have a buuuunch of personal information (photos, writings, my novel in progress, etc.)

4. I'm worried because computer repair shops always demand your password to "check" if it works (which in certain shops, they snoop around your personal information if they're not well known).

Now, my laptop is an Asus, and their company is big. I feel slightly less stressed about the situation since it's being repaired (under warranty still) by a well-known company. However, it depends on the individual and the lack of an overseer monitoring the technicians.

Call me paranoid, but the fact that a company has one of my most personal passwords in their hands (which accesses a lot of personal stuff on my computer as well) just scares me a little bit.

Could any of you vouch for ASUS to maybe help me calm down a little? A lot of my very personal information is on that computer and I'm paranoid as forget about what's going to happen if there just so happens to be some nosey kid who takes up the responsibility of fixing my computer.

The last time I sent this thing in for repair they didn't even screw all the screws back in (found that out like two days ago). I feel as if there might be someone irresponsible taking up my computer's case and I'm just so worried.

Guys halp me pls.

Use Puppy Linux on a flash drive and some terminal tricks to recover the info off the drive.

It's already mailed, I wasn't even able to boot my computer anyway.

it would be funny if they sent it back with a refurbished harddrive

Sometimes they wipe your hard drive. At least Sony and Acer do. Good luck.

1) do you have backups of all your files? if not, why not? (also they won't care about pictures of you and your cats or a novel about a troupe of homoloveual jugglers that you're writing)

2) if the harddrive plain ol' doesn't work, they won't be able to see your history anyway

3) remove tinfoil hat at earliest convenience

I'm hoping the hard drive is fried to the point of no recovery. I'm willing to sacrifice hours worth of downloading steam games and a few important writings for the data I don't want anyone else to see. lol

And no, I don't have any backups, sadly. I'm the kind of guy that takes risks for the sake of keeping some space. 8(
Basically certain personal photos that should never be seen by anyone but me. I don't care what they look at as long as it's not them. Luckily I had it stored in a folder locker, but it just so happens that my computer password was the same as the folder locker. Oops.

Perhaps invest in an exterior hard drive and keep your backup on that. I certainly would.

confirmed: nikki keeps nude pics on an external

Other way around. They aren't nudes, but they're photos of my girlfriend that if anyone else were to look at, they'd probably be dead by now.

I will actually consider doing this. Can't believe I didn't think of this before. lol

maybe asus will be nice and share  :cookieMonster:

That's actually what I'm afraid of. If I end up finding them online after I get my laptop back, there's gonna be a big lawsuit coming their way. c:

Even that wouldn't be enough to contain my severe need to beat the stuff out of someone though.

I'd probably find out where the guy lives and beat him with a bat.

starting to think you might actually be wearing more than one tinfoil hat
