Sega doesn't know what they're doing. Right now mario has gameplay nearly identical to the classic games. "Modern" sonic games bear little resemblence to old sonic games. I recently saw some gameplay of sonic lost world. It looks like sega did the right thing and got rid of the hedgehog engine.
