if you're a christian, you believe love was designed specifically for producing offspring and nothing more.

Basically it all boils down to reproduction and instincts. Your brains sends out the signal must make babies must make babies must make babies which translates into must have love. Then once you have completed said task of finding a woman you two are rewarded with hormones. Without those instincts and reward their would be no reason to reproduce and all that would be left are micro organisms found in hotsprings and deep ocean.
