Every composer has their own sounds just as every listener has their own preferences, not to mention that both scenes emphasize polar opposites. :/

Whether it's chip or demo depends on the artist's attitude when composing. The modern demoscene emphasizes hi-fi sounds (typically by optimizing vintage consoles in a never-ending quest to push them to their limits), while the modern chipscene turns that concept on its head and emphasizes lo-fi sounds for the hell of it. If the music precedes 4mat (early 1990s) and isn't being played by a handheld, then it's more than likely demo, which was all the rage around then. ;)

Sorry, I must've sounded pushy. I often put my opinion out there like it's fact :p
I do like a lot of lo-fi stuff though, such as many of Radix's chiptunes (paul the penguin is one of my all time chiptune favorites :D )

I understand. I've always been a big fan of the hi-fi sounds, like maktone's and svenzzon's.

You should check out µCollective. It's not exactly the same, but it's a step in the right direction (and I think 2xAA is running it - he's a cool guy).

I don't know of many demo artists, but you might like Daze. Chibi-Tech wrote a demotune recently, but I couldn't tell you if she's written more.

If you're familiar with the basics of tracking, then moving on to an esoteric tracker such as LSDJ (for the Game Boy line) isn't difficult at all. It'll take awhile to get used to the layout, but once you get it, it's pretty simple. LSDJ is donationware; you can download it and emulate it for $2, or go above and beyond and flash it to a 64m USB Smart Card from Kitsch-bent. I think it's like $40. There's also LGPT, which is a sample-based LSDJ knock-off for the PSP, GP2X series and a few other consoles... It can also be emulated. Oh, and it's free.

Couldn't tell you about NES or Atari composition. :p I was meaning to look into that...

I've found packs of LSDJ samples and they're really nice, it'd be cool to try to get that feel genuinely.

Over the past few days I've downloaded a bunch of random tracks by the artists you've recommended. I'm digging "Abbey Road" by Radix and "A Tribute to Loreen" by Algar. Out of curiosity: these guys don't have accounts on Soundcloud/Bandcamp/etc, do they? Downloading compressed files and unzipping each one individually is really impractical lol :p
