Personally, I don't like fighting completely random people, I don't know what my opponent is capable of. Does that mean I'm going to give into every demand? No. OP is in a different situation, he's outnumbered, they're stronger, they could very possibly have a weapon. Telling OP that he should have fought is stupid and generally very bad advice.
