As long as you know simple rules of fighting and they don't try to double team you than you can get them.

Never turn your back, they'll try to turn you around without a doubt.

You are entitled to self defense, but you can, in fact, overstep that.  If someone tries to mug you and you shoot them in the leg you can face consequences.
Your best bet is to carry a knife around for intimidation or in the case you feel threatened for your life, to use as a weapon.

This is why I always carry a knife when I'm out alone. It doesn't require a permit (that I know of), just don't wave it around and cause trouble.

If I were you, I would have pretended to have a weapon in my back pocket and reached for it like I was about to pull it out. That'd probably never work though. :D

By the way, you should use the iPod tracker app if you have it. Those are really useful.
