Author Topic: Tips on hosting a server?  (Read 2288 times)

Hello, I'm rather new here and now I decided to host a server. Any tips to keep in mind while I host the server?

Don't be a friend host, have good internet so people can play without having high ping, admin and super admin people wisely.

I have a 10 mbps internet, being shared with another computer, so that could be a problem. How many players max you think I should have?

Depends on it, get a friend to go on while you are hosting it, ask him how much ping he has, I use a hosting service so I can't explain it.

The max players should be determined by the size of the map/build and what your server can handle. You don't want tons of people crammed into a tiny build, and you don't want the server to lag.

Don't have extra addons enabled, the shorter the wait time the better

Well the first thing you should do is host a server called "bronies and furries only" and any that join perma ban them to clean out your server.

Hosting the Server:
My internet upload speed is thirty five megabytes per second and I can only hold up to fifteen people on a small build without lag.
I'd say you'll barely make it past five, if even that high.

If you want more, you'll either have to ask a friend with faster internet to host the server for you or pay for a hosting service.

Three most well-known hosting services:
Kaphost Blockland Servers
Return to Blockland Dedicated - Hosting
CBMBLHost

Kaphost costs less and might be slightly more reliable, however Return to Blockland is more user-friendly.
Your pick.
I have no experience with CBMBLHost, so don't ask about that.

Picking Add-Ons:
- Make sure they're RTB supported or you might get a virus or find out it doesn't work right.
- Try to pick the more well-known add-ons or users who join your server will be all like, "WTF is this thing?"
- Test them before you host.

Also, only the add-ons that need to be enabled in order for the server to work right.
No extra pointless add-ons.
The more add-ons you have, the longer a user will have to wait till they spawn.

Building and Eventing:
If your not good with building, try to find people who are that can help.
Someone like me might be able to help with events, unless your fine with them.

Never build "crap-builds".  The server's build(s) is what a lot of times attracts players.
Pay attention to detail!

Super Administrators, Administrators and Moderators:
I don't recommend having an admin application.  People can easily lie.
Try to pick people you know and can surely trust.

If you do use an application, make sure it's DETAILED.
You don't want the person who you're about to make admin to turn out to be just a troll who banned everyone.

I recommend you use the Moderator add-on.
That way you can have users who help host the server but at the same time can't abuse their power if you're still not too sure about them.

That's all the advise I can give you.
Also, remember, the user is always right.
Apparently, I'm wrong.
The user is not always right,

The user is not always right,
also never pull a Tezuni please.

Couldn't find the link.

The user is not always right,
also never pull a Tezuni please.
Jeez, just trying to help a guy out.

Don't advertise you will get a full server everynight if you dont

don't be an idiot and
take player's suggestions
if there's one group of people that knows how fun the server is, it's the players
if you're a guy who doesn't care about player's suggestions you're going down pretty fast

Well,
Here's a thing that happened to me on a server about a month ago:

When I was using the MAS Rocket L. in  one of my games, people were complaining it's too OP. (It was with vehicles, not just players) I said fine, and replaced it with the normal RL. Then the other half of the server were complaining and wanted it back. So I did. And some said "Don't take the requests of 2 people!" I said "Maybe if you guys were talking about it..." and "Sorry, I can't make everyone happy." I took it away again...
And it goes on.

So don't do that too much.
And remember, it's your server. If you want to listen to them, fine. If you don't, that's fine too. If they complain, say it's your server, you can do what you want with it.

If it's something that might help the server, maybe you could do it.
If it's just some random guy's opinion, like "OGM TIS GUN SUKZ CHNJ IT NOWWW!!!11" then, well, maybe don't.

I don't think these will really be a problem.

And don't be afraid to kick or ban people if they are being a richard or something.
But don't kick/ban for stupid reasons.

Oh, one more thing, only give admin to people you trust.
Or not give admin at all. That's what I do. :p
