Author Topic: Are We Still Using That Old Engine?  (Read 6696 times)

I don't think this is one of our worries. I'd rather have improvements and additions to what we have now than having to work with a brand new deal.

But, who knows? Maybe the devs will surprise us in the future. They have in the past many times.

There is no need for a new engine. That would be a monstrous amount of work.

I know it's a lot of work, but, it has been time to change the engine for a while now.

Most, if not all the limitations you're talking about can probably be improved.

No, I remember a while ago I reported the lighting issue to badspot and he said it was an engine limitation, so I will point out that if it were so easily fixable he would of fixed it.

It's like constantly repairing something like clothes or furniture, as time goes on, repair after repair, the quality degrades so its better to start newly after such long time.(kind of how you reinstall windows to make it go fast or upgrading something to a new version)

there is no real reason to change the engine, it is far more work that it is worth and the current iteration is working great

You're mixing up your contexts. The limitation could probably be improved in some way. It doesn't mean that it'll happen, and certainly doesn't mean that it's easy, but it's possible.

It's also generally not good logic to assume that if something is possible it's done already.

Comparing what gets rendered in this simple game (graphically-speaking) to what other games render, this game consumes much more processing power than what it's worth (and by worth I mean graphical quality)

and like I said the quality and work it takes will degrade with this engine.

Any other engine would just require the changing of a number.

i'm 98% certain that eight lights is an openGL limit. (the first one in blockland would be the sun i guess)
ofc that doesn't mean there aren't other ways than the current method.

i'm not saying there aren't superior engines, but this one isn't really that bad, and modifying it seems to have worked fine so far. of course we can't speak for the developers.

other games typically have at most 20-40 real time objects rendering shadows
this game can have thousands
you clearly know nothing about anything

lol
"PORT BLOCKLAND TO CRYENGINE"

That is a loaded question, and a poorly phrased one at that.
Not sure what you are trying to ask but I can direct you to the "add-ons" subforum if you want to see the "possibilities".

It's a simple question and you're a smart guy, you don't have to be an starfish about it.

I myself am for a new engine, but I mean converting the game probably would be too hard for just Badspot to do it.

basically this is what all these discussions end up in.
we can dream but there's like a 99% chance its not going to happen. badspot almost certainly has a day job and better things to do than to give us blockland in a new engine.

which raises the question: when badspot is nearing old age will he make this opensource and/or make BL freeware? or will it slowly die in the dust?

It would be easier for Badspot to make some sort of sequel for Blockland from scratch on a newer engine instead of porting the whole game I believe, but still, remember the announcement of Shadows and Shaders? They explained that the terrains were not removed just for that graphical update but to allow more updates to come, who knows if Badspot have a bigger surprise for us, but in any case he needs more developers to help him out.
