Author Topic: Are We Still Using That Old Engine?  (Read 6694 times)

Isn't the engine blockland uses maxed out to its full capabilities of what it could do as of now?

Blockland would look amazing and crisp if we were ported onto Unity.
I think us moving to the Unity engine is a worthwhile investment.

But as stated before it would probably take a crap load of time and as far as I know only Badspot is working on Blockland.

I know it'd be a pain in the neck but if it could improve us as a game as a whole, and bring Blockland more revenues, why not?

But that would destroy modding

How so? Wouldn't it be possible to convert all of the add-on's we had onto the new engine? Or would they all have to be remade and erased? I think that if they all had to be erased (not saves but add-ons), then it would still be worth it only if we got onto Steam and had a bigger active player amount.

No, because the unity engine is completely different, no more torkscript, no real easy way to get custom things, all scripts have to be compiled (unless badspot creates some script interpreter) etc

Unitys shadow distance is very low as well

Would it be possible to have a new eventing system made and designed for the Unity engine? I know a lot of the commands and code would then have to change. Torque is somewhat outdated at this point, and if Blockland moves to a different engine - I think it would make way for us to move forward as a video game in the industry. At some point, any online game should modernize.

the amount of work it would take to move to a new engine, and for how old blockland already is.
it would be easier to just make a brand new game and call it blockland2.

I would buy blockland 2 if badspot made it.

I would too, having the new one separated from the old one isn't actually a bad idea.

I think that it would be safe to say that if Blockand2 was ever made, it should just be experimental.
