Author Topic: Is spelling part of grammar? Or two separate things?  (Read 9429 times)

Can someone with more knowledge correct me? I always thought that grammar and spelling are two separate things, grammar is grammar, and spelling is part of the English Mechanics, which capitalization and punctuation are also part of.

Is that correct or no?

I think capitalization and punctuation belong in grammar, and spelling is just spelling a word 100% correct

Spelling is more closely related to phonetics than grammar. However, the two sometimes overlap, like when contractions come into play. And capitalization and punctuation are a part of grammar. Then it's both spelling and grammar. I hope this answered your question.

So spelling and grammar are two separate things, capitalization and punctuation belong to grammar but spelling can sometimes go under the category of grammar?

Well, spelling never really goes under the "category of grammar", but it does come close sometimes.
