i have no issue reading peoples posts. this is a forum where we chat in near real time to each other. its not very important how much punctuation you use. we arent writing long essays to each other here.
Uh....
There actually are very few cases where someone has grammar so terrible that they are incomprehensible.
Minor typos aren't usually a problem, and when I see them you can normally forgive them if you look at your keyboard and see how easy it is to hit the wrong key.
There are a few grammatical errors that do annoy me, such as the misuse of "Your/You're" and "Their/There/They're".
That's solely because it's not usually an accident, but rather a lack of education on the matter.
But, I don't let it get to me too much. Especially as I've made similar mistakes, particularly while tired.
And I don't really care too much when people don't know certain grammatical rules.
I make mistakes all the time in that. I'm dreadful with apostraphes and colons/semi-colons.
And a friend of mine is constantly picking me up on rules like "Fewer/Less". But I also pick him up on spelling, so it's all fair.
I think the problem could be solved quite well by just rethinking some things.
For starters, don't get too involved in people making mistakes. They can have any number of reasons.
From poor understanding of language due to physical disability (deafness), to geographical/cultural differences meaning English isn't a first language, to just being younger and not knowing as much about English.
The second thing is just to be nicer when pointing out spelling mistakes.
If you have nothing else to say other than to correct very minor mistakes, then don't bother. It just comes off as annoying.
If you have something else to say, then say it. You can also point out the mistake.
But while you do so, try and explain where they went wrong. Let them know as if you are teaching them.
If people understand how they are wrong, they're more inclined to change.
And really, never use someone's poor grammar or spelling as an excuse to belittle them, or ignore their point in an argument. It is beyond petty and serves no purpose.
If someone's posts are beyond recognition, then it's slightly different. But even then, you don't have to be rude.
And you don't have to repeat the same thing at some one again and again. If someone else has pointed out their poor grammar, don't join in. One is enough.
