Author Topic: How do you pronounce .gif?  (Read 8534 times)

I say "jif". And Sentry, it's not grammar, it's phonetics.

The guy that created the image format calls it gif, with a soft G.

It's Jif.

Like gift, without the T.
I didn't even know people even pronounced it like peanut butter.

See how there's an extra "e" in "gorgeous"? That's how you turn a "g" before a/o/u into a soft "g".

2 romance languages share the pronunciation change between e/i and a/o/u. English generally makes "g" soft with ge/gi/gy.

There are many reasons for those exceptions. Some words of Germanic origin, since the "g" is always hard, never got their spellings changed when French and Latin stems were introduced to English.

I pronounce it

Guh-iff

Gif

KALPHITER IS CORRECT
YOU ALL ARE WRONG ITS JIF

The real question is about the default pronunciation rule for ge/gi, or at leas for gi. GIF is a fabricated word (actually, an acronym that turned into a word) and has no history.

Everyone but Kalphiter is wrong. never thought i'd say that

Technically nobody is wrong. OP just asked how we pronounce it, not what the correct way to pronounce it is.

The creator of .gifs says it's jif so it's jif.

The problem is nobody cares what he says.
