Author Topic: How do you pronounce .gif?  (Read 8664 times)

Thats like when people pronounce your last name wrong (Or in my case they do it a lot) and you tell them the correct pronounciation and they say the way that they pronounce it is also correct...
Proper nouns are a totally different story.

Its closely similar when the creator of the word tells you how its pronounced...

It's pronounced Jiff but I pronounce it "Gif" like Gift without the t.

I spell it out.
Yeah, seems a lot more simple to just call it a G.I.F as if it was an acronym
sounds less silly that way too

I prefer hard g pronunciation

It's similar in spelling to gift, so why not

The proper pronunciation is Jiff, so that's how I pronounce it.

i alternate between spelling it out, 'gif', and 'jif'

hey, don't ask me, i don't know why

'Jiff' and 'Giff' are both correct so nobody is "wrong"

I'd hate to read a book by you. Almost every sentence would end in an ellipsis.

lol everyone who says there's a proper pronunciation needs to just stop.
the english language is entirely moldable, and there are plenty of words out there today pronounced more than one way.

the creator doesn't get to forget to tell everyone how to pronounce his own word and then some years later decide "oh sorry guys turns out it's said exactly the opposite of the way you're saying it"

sure, the intended pronunciation is jiff, but the community written way was and continues to be giff.

I feel the same way about Pokemon names.
Anime pronounciations never fit what I think.

They call it "Ar-Kee-Us" in the film, but I can't see it anyway but "Ar-See-Us".
But apparantly that way makes the sound "Arse-ee-us" and Arse is too rude for Pokemon.
