Author Topic: Why were um... Well sorta 'textures'? removed?  (Read 2160 times)

I'm a 38ker so I'm pretty new. I was watching some old videos of Blockland gameplay and there were (Not sure of the names) sort of like 'textures' So not everything was made from bricks. Does anyone know why this was removed and when?

Thanks!

Brick textures, if that is what you are referring to, were not removed.

Oh no sorry, I think it's called terrain.

Interiors and terrain were removed because "they are old and slow, not to mention ugly". I wouldn't mind having them back, as many of them were a lot of fun, but I'm not going to complain about it, and, protip, neither should you.

No, I was just asking why they were removed.

I just told you. Re-read my first sentence in the above post.

No, I said that because you said that 'protip' don't get annoyed over it but I wasn't...

MEH confusing :/

The developers stated that they were removed because they had been causing slowdowns in development, were buggy still, and weren't as graphically impressive as you would expect from a modern game. In the same update, the new shadows and shaders were implemented. AFAIK, there's no confirmed connection between those two other than a shared update and possibly being easier to implement with T&I gone.

But there is a downside to the new shaders, if you have a great graphics card, like i do, you'll be fine, if you have some intel graphics, then you cant run the new shadows and shaders, I have a nvidia geforce gtx 660.

My laptop came installed with Intel, but I can still play any Source game with medium to high specs on. Yet I can't use shaders in Blockland....

Dude, you are wrong... terrains and interiors were removed because the current Torque engine couldn't support them with shaders... Not because they were "old and slow, not to mention ugly" you silly.

You're both wrong.

In order to make all this possible, though, we need to kill two old, slow features in Blockland: interiors and terrains.

These two features complicate Blockland’s code tremendously. That means we can’t add game features very quickly. They still have bugs in them (after years of work). They are slow, too - bricks are about 90% of their speed and can do a LOT more (explosions, events, in-game editing).

They also look bad.

Let me rephrase that: You're emphasizing the wrong part.

Or rather, I just didn't emphasize to your liking. Everything in that quote is a valid reason as to why they were taken out, just because I posted those specific reasons doesn't make me wrong.
