As I first watched the breathtaking "monty", I knew that I would have to rewatch it to absorb the full meaning of it. When I watched it again, I thought I understood it more -- but now I realize that additional viewings are not what will help me interpret the full meaning of the film. It is almost like a riddle, cloaked in a mysterious and enigmatic aura.
This is, perhaps, the most meaningful and ambitious blockland video ever created. I anticipate that as more watch this, they, too, will realize the complexity of this movie. The film's story begs to be interpreted and understood, yet that seems impossible. Perhaps it is a metaphor for life and how it is not meant to be understood until death. As you listen to the score and the actor's repeated cries of "GI yo AC isn't good," you will cry. You will keep your eyes glued to the screen, awaiting an answer.
Yet it never comes.
I could tell you that this film is about a single bot zooming into this camera. That this movie is about reversing the direction of life to keep it forward. That the symbolic meaning of this film will be ignored by many. Do you feel wiser from simply reading this review? I'm just repeating what I could tell you about this film in order to pretend that I am smarter than everyone, even though I'm simply hiding behind a façade.
Perhaps the main character of the movie, Monty (played by a generic Blockland bot), is also hiding from the cruel realities of life. He pretends to be a defective AI, hoping that everyone will ignore him. Yet, each cry he makes has a wistful sound to it, pleading an escape. He hopes that you, the viewer, will simply ignore him and let him rot within cyberspace. To be forgotten, forever and ever. The actor's portrayal in the film is heartbreaking.
What is also spectacular of the film is the score. It evokes the exact shade of melancholy that the actor is displaying throughout the film, yet seems to also go against it at the same time. As you listen to it again and again, you will realize that at first, the melody seems to be happy, much like the façade behind which Monty hides. Then, it transitions to a much more depressing sound, going beyond the carapace.
But I digress. I think that you will see this edgy and visionary film, directed by Otto-san. Anywhere you may go within the Blockland Forums, people will be discussing this film, conjuring theories of their own. One person may say "I don't get it." The names of Freud, Carl Jung, and other psychologists may appear in posts, explaining the psychological effects of the video. Yet no one will ever understand the true meaning behind this work of art.
For a short film, "monty" has made me question the purpose of my own life. It is surprising that such a thing can be done in half of a minute.
6/5 A++ Already saw again.
Kudos to you, Otto-san.
EDIT: God damn you Charles, I was first. .-.
