That's because we use an arbitrary base-10 number system.

Actually, now that I think about it, saying "base 10" conveys exactly zero information, because EVERY base is base 10 in itself - and if there's no non-cultural preferential base, then there's no way to know which is which.

How do we know that we haven't picked up an alien's prime number hello, and we didn't just miss it because they use base pi?
