the active is just more "heavy duty".  personally i stuck with the standard S4 because i wanted the 13mp camera over the 8.  still is practically identical however, aside from its waterproof/shock resistance/etc.

OP i advise you get some additional warranty/insurance if your carrier has it.  kids like you always stroll into high school with like the latest whatever and then cry in 6 months when they drop the phone and the screen breaks.
