It's a lot more expensive at my school, each person needs a total of $1000 after initial amount and fundraising.
It was like that for my school too in the 8th grade (two years ago).
So, coincidentally, my birthday was around the time my school went, so a few family members and I went to D.C. and saw a WHOLE LOT more than my school did.
For example, we went into the White House (before it closed to the public), we got to see fresh snow fall (I saw snow for the first time! Florida never gets snow, my school only saw disgusting slush.) and I got to play in the snow.
Very fun historically, very big metropolis type area. Kinda like New York and Chicago, except a bit smaller in size.
Oh, and please be careful, some jerks try to scam you into giving money like other big cities. Almost got robbed in D.C. last time I went.
