Well you would actually think that many of the interceptors placed throughout the United States would knock out the ICBM. That leads to sneaking in a nuclear bomb into  major city(ies). Nuclear Winter is a huge problem and, if enough nuclear weapons are set off, it would be improbable we won't get out of it in the people's lifetime who are surviving without plants (can't grow), possible contaminated water, contaminated livestock.

1. Planes cannot intercept a loving ICBM A. Most ICBM's (Trident II for example) throw out multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRV's) B. And their terminal velocity is hypersonic speed, faster than any Jet Fighter of the United States Armed Forces.

2. The United States no longer operators dedicated interceptors (Last Interceptor to be in United States service was the Convair F-106 Delta Dart).
