"A phone only lasts a couple of years before it breaks or becomes obsolete. Although it's often just one part which killed it we throw everything away since it's almost impossible to repair or upgrade. visit www.phonebloks.com to show your support and raise your voice."

I'm no environmentalist, but wouldn't it be cool to build a phone the way you want it?
If so, show your support @ https://www.thunderclap.it/projects/2931-phonebloks

mother of forgetin' god

I remember reading an article or watching a video or something like that about how much electronic waste we produce.
It basically said that the manufacturers purposely do that so we buy more from them.
Makes me wonder if they'd do anything to stop this

I really hope this makes it through and actually becomes a thing.

Hate to be the party pooper, but this to me just sounds like an easy way to monopolise on the phone industry. Just think about it, anyone who gets one wouldn't get a new phone, because they can just upgrade theirs. The company(s) making the 'blocks' can sell them for ridiculously high prices, because without them the phone is useless (or outdated). If they just sell the blocks for less than the price of another phone, people will buy the blocks instead of a new phone. Over the course of a few years, they will have to buy a few blocks for upgrades and replacements. Overall you would have paid a lot more than if you just bought a new phone, which has all the upgrades and replacements already.

Still, it would be great to see something like this. I wouldn't be surprised if it spreads to other devices as well (Laptops, computers, TVs).

Ninja: Device companies usually make things un-repairable just so you have to buy a whole new one. If you send a device to get repaired by the company who own it, if the repairs are cheaper than a new device, they could (but probably wouldn't, depending on warranties and other stuff) just tell you they cant repair it.

I meant blocks, easily changeable, not what we have now. An tech-dummy couldn't upgrade a computer, but they could loosen a few screws, pop a block off, and put a new one in place.

thats pretty much like a computer today
atx motherboards just have around 6 six screws to put in, and bam your done
for the cpu you just lift the lid and pop it down
bam its done
a graphics card is even easier, you just push it into a pci express slot and bam you are done
its really easily if you just realize that it is

This isn't going to work good. In fact, they probably won't even build a prototype because the idea is fail.

This would be totally awesome but there's no way.
