Author Topic: Can you use a smartphone without service?  (Read 1917 times)

My dad had an old HTC smartphone but just upgraded to a Galaxy S4 over the weekend. I don't think he's doing anything with his old phone, so I'm wondering if it's possible to still use it like you would an iPod where there's no data, talk, or text but you can still get apps. Anyone on here know?

I searched Google but I can't tell if any of the results explain a situation like mine.

Ya you can still use it just without any cellular service.

Ok, thank you

Just remove the simcard and use it on wifi.

what everyone else said

This. Of course you would need to have a gmail account in order to download apps, though its easy to get one.

If you want to make calls you could use skype

you should still be able to use it for that stuff if it's connected to wifi

I don't think removing the simcard would matter

I already have my own cell phone it's just not a smartphone.

why don't you ask him to get you service for the HTC?

Because he wouldn't. That's just the way he is lol.

Plus I still have until the end of March or so before my two year contract is up with this phone.

you can get messaging services like Kik on your smartphone for free

since you wont have a dataplan, they'll only work when youre connected to wifi, but im assuming that wont be a problem most of the time.

plus you have an actual phone to text on and so forth.

you can even use any deactivated cell phone to call 911

im not joking

Unless you don't have a SIM card in it.
