Author Topic: forced to switch to windows or else i can't play with my friends ever  (Read 4410 times)

c'mon arukemo just use windows so you can play all the games yu want with catzoo

You either take the solving solution or you complain long enough to see yourself become the villain

Purple you make a new Linux issues thread every week or so, do you maybe think that it might be better for our sanity for you to just settle on windows and stop bothering us with your "How 2 OS" issues?

If they are forcing you to do something you hate, are they really your friend?

oh god, are you serious? Like are you saying he should end a friendship because they want to play a windows game and he has this circlejerky attitude for linux that is uncalled for. They're really awful friends for wanting him to play a game with them.

exactly lol.

sure maybe linux is faster of an os. but if you have modern hardware you wont feel the difference regardless of the os you use.
os speed is the most handicapped requirement a person can have. its so unimportant in the grand scheme of all around pc use.
also, any time i ever see a linux user talking about his os anywhere onthe net. it seems to always be technical issues trying to do something that is easily done on windows. or trying to make something from windows run.

its like a fulltime loving job using that os. a non stop game to try and be windows while trying to convince everyone you know that you hate windows...

For the record, there are more reasons to use a linux distrobution than just speed. Often, speed isn't even a valid factor.

I and others simply prefer the way linux works in general, the freedom linux distributions offer, the small filesize, and ample software development / programming support. Tools needed to create applications, e.g. python, lua, ruby, code editors and IDEs, come pre-installed on a lot of distributions.

On Windows, if you were to install an application, more than likely, you'll need to distribute whatever .dll files or libraries that the application used along with it. That is, if you don't want to annoy your users with the hassle of having to install said library. The problem with this is that the filesize can grow quickly, for the sake of commonly used libraries (SDL and such) that need to come packaged with your program. The user can install whatever libraries they need to, but again, that's extra work that, even when seemingly easy or simple, most users won't want to go through.

When using a linux distrobution, most programs are installed via packages and a package manager. This package usually comes with a list of dependencies. When this package is installed, it downloads and installs your program and the libraries automatically. If you already have a dependency for a program installed, it doesn't install again. You're left with one copy of your library that all applications are free to take advantage of. Filesize can be reduced greatly this way.

Of course, that's not the only reason why a lot of linux-based program installations can end up in smaller file sizes, it's just because of the fact that a lot of programs, desktop environments, window managers and such all built for linux, and even GNU/Linux itself, just happens to take up a hell of a lot less space. Why this is, I'm not sure.

On the subject of the freedom linux distrobutions have to offer, not only are there tens, maybe hundreds of different "flavors" of GNU/linux itself, they each come with the option of installing one of many desktop environments and window managers. Some DEs come with their own WM, and a lot of others are standalone. The theming system is probably the easiest to work with in any operating system, and even in more locked down distributions, customizability is one of linux's strong points.

These large bricks of text are my main reasons for using linux (elementary OS) as my main operating system. I don't play too many games, and the ones I do play are either available through wine, or have a native linux version available, meaning I can go without Windows pretty well. Obviously you (or other "anti-linux" readers) may not agree with my thoughts or decisions, but different people have different needs.

okay, first off, it's spelled distribution, what the heck
and those really seem to all boil down to a computer being garbage or not. i don't see any "customization" that isn't already fully possible in, hell, any modern OS

Does it bother you so much that you have to whine about it?

Even so, some people just prefer linux.

ok, where the forget have you been? iirc, the last time i made a 'linux help thread', it was in AUGUST 5TH

Does your friend asking you to play a game that's Windows-only bother you so much that you have to whine about it?
