Author Topic: Do Violent Video Games actually make people Violent?  (Read 8723 times)

I think it depends on the person's state of mind. I do not think people who have mental disorders and any type of anger issues should play violent video games. Besides, it's the parent's decision.

Cooking Mama doesn't make me a chef.
DiRT 2 doesn't make me a race-car driver.
Why would Grand Theft Auto make me a murderer?

I've seen wonderful people change in a terrible way because of their addiction to highly addictive MMORPG's/violent shooters. Addiction is a disease, and that's what happens with addiction. It's the same reaction as an alcoholic but with less violence. Any addiction is dangerous.
Yes addiction but what about just playing an hour or two a week or so? I'm talking about generally playing violent games for a short period of time.

Someone finally said it.

Kids have to know that there's a difference between video games and reality. That there is consequences to your actions. The parents have to teach them that BEFORE they play it.

Personally, I think that violent videogames would DETRACT from a sociopath's want to murder people, because he is venting by killing people in-game. I tell you what does cause stuff like violence and school shootings: Bullying, stress and bad parents. We should be focusing on the REAL reasons instead of using videogames as a scapegoat.

A bunch of people say they play them for a short period of time, and then months later they play for a full period of time. I used to lie to myself about how long I used to spend, I was never able to count the time I was on. It varies, and like another guy said it depends on the person. It can happen to anyone though.

i have an addiction with nachos.

Okay, let's put it this way.

Today's Media.. streams a lot of horrible, horrible stuff. Brutal killings, rape, murder, random imprisonment, theft, kidnapping, armed robbery and etc to name just a few. Such media is spread every day into TV news broadcasts, radio stations, and newspapers. Every single person on the planet is subject to at least two forms of this every single day, guaranteed, if there is any sort of news source around, or some kind of media. INCLUDING casual conversation.

Is everyone a rapist? No.
Is everyone a murderer? No.
Is everyone a thief? No.

If anything, playing violent video games helps to relieve stress to help relax, as well as get rid of such violent urges. Anyone who thinks that they actually make someone violent obviously has no loving clue what they're talking about.

Are you serious? I mean really, where do you get your facts? The onion?
I've been playing games for years and NOT ONCE have I ever wanted to imitate a game or anything like that.

Documentaries, friends, family members, articles from the NY Times and the BBC, and various other sources. Addicts can never admit that they have a problem, and most don't realize how irrationally they may act as a result of the games.

And Stephen Colbert
Obviously you're been talking to the wrong people. I assume you all get your information from elderly people that don't know what a video game actually is and just assume it's a brain washing system, as well as paid off dipstuffs that manage to get their faulty information into the news.

most sane people can distinguish from fantasy and reality and have a grasp of right and wrong.

if anything, violent video games may be a way to vent their stress and such to an extent.

if you're not of the same mental caliber as most fully developed human beings maybe it'd hurt your stability a bit, but to the common person i seriously doubt it'd hurt you any more than movies, the evening news, or the real world.

I don't get it. A video game is just a virtual game, there isn't much to understand about it. An elderly person is more than capable to understand the drift. It is just a fact that it does effect the human mind.
