I wasn't gonna leave it plain wood. I was gonna paint all the legs. Also use a route to bevel it maybe if it looks good. I wanted to top to be a butcherblock, which is always just plain wood with clear lacquer.

Nope never done anything like this before. I mean I've done some really small things before. When I was younger I used to love to just use all the tools on stuff with my grandfather. The biggest thing I've ever done is building like a doll house out of plywood for a rabbit. I've used most of the tools before though.

My dad also knows about this stuff since he went to a vocational school in high school. We also have a garage full of tools but rarely use them.

It also might be since I've been watching a lot of woodworking videos and most of everything is really simple. It seems like all of the concepts are easy just take some practice to get good at.

my grandpa always was into making insanely intricate bird houses, and he did a bit or carpentry as well.

I would always help him with stuff, so I kind of took the hobby to heart, it's fun and really satisfying seeing something you spent time on, that looks really good

Yeah, I love the feeling of building something. That's part of why I want to build the desk. The other is I get it to the exact sizes I want. It's also going to cost quite a bit less. To build this desk at about 3ft tall by 3ft wide and about 7ft long is less than $100. It'll probably run closer to $150ish with renting the truck to move the wood and buying the screws and all that. Still a great price for a desk that big.

Yea I like to think Im an intermediate general carpenter I build everything from folding chairs and tables to tobak pipes and toys
my dad is a good carpenter I mean he built our house and has built a small cabin we sold years ago my grandfather was really good
I'm still learning though I'd like to turn it into a profession

i like doing woodworking, and also a very small amount of welding and metalworking

woodworking is great for time wasting, and building semi-useful things, likes tables or chairs

And storage buildings houses cabinets fences snakees ceilings beds couches bowling halls barbecue tables food tables table tables more houses toys parts trees bowls plates toilet rooms and combs

I'm thinking this might be what I want. I would want to change the top 2x4's on the side you sit at to 2x2's if it's sturdy.

I do metalwork, helping to build 120 pound robots for FRC. If you don't know what that is, look it up. It's awesome.

So yah, I use lathes, drill presses, mills, sanders, and other such tools working with aluminum and occasionally steel. It's awesome.

Here is another rough blueprint. It's for an entertainment cabinet. There would be 1"x " notches in the wood to hold the shelves. In my plan I use 2x2's for the legs, and some type of slab that is about 1" thick. I'm thinking of using plywood but don't know if it's sturdy enough. The shelves would also be screwed into the legs with a pocket jig to keep everying looking neat.


This design would hold my stereo reciever on the bottom shelf, cable box on the second, and my center speaker on the top. On one of the side tops I would put my PS3. These dimensions are enough to hold all of this stuff on top of the shelves very nicely. I have a wall mount for my tv so don't need any space for the tv.


My major concern is that the 2x2's and the 1" thick sheets won't be able to keep shape and warp.

for the 1" sheets use particleboard, it will hold its shape and wont bend under the weight of a large TV
