Author Topic: my landlord is a richard (rant)  (Read 3380 times)

so since I've moved out, I've been living in the same place, a small apartment off of a fairly busy road.  Me and a roommate share the place, and split the rent, he's one of my best friends and I have no issues with him.

However, seeing as we're both 17 about to be 18, we can't afford a luxury apartment in the middle of the suburbs.  So the place we decided to take is a place still in the same city as where we're from, and the place looked actually really nice when we first got it.

It had a community pool, a gym (meh not too much in there, i still keep my actual gym membership), and the apartments were really nice, dishwashers, two bedroom, a lot of floor space.  It's a simple two story each person gets one story kind of deal, so of course we knew we'd deal with sound issues depending on our neighbors.

Now, it's been 6 months, and this is the current status of the apartment, the dishwasher floods the entire kitchen upon use, the dryer for clothes doesn't work, there's no ethernet (was promised to be installed in a week or so when we moved in), the grounds around the place is very, very unkempt.  And the side paneling on the place is turning green because nobody has washed it.

Now some of you say, go out wash the place yourself, cut the grass yourself, hire a repairman, install ethernet yourself, etc.

We can't, it breaks out contract agreements and we've tried to get our landlord to allow us, but he won't.

And we have a one year contract, meaning we can't leave the agreement.

Hiring an attorney for the landlord not keeping his end of the contract is majorly expensive, and if we don't win, we have no way to pay the guy.

Not sure what to do or how to go about it.

I live off of a very busy street near the airport in a tiny apartment about the size of a classroom, maybe a little bigger. It's a nice apartment and our landlords take care of everything.

Your landlord is a douche.

ethernet? dont you have cable in the room? just have your own service.

Is the apartment owned by a larger company, or is the landlord the highest owner? If the former, complain to them.

what a friend
This.

What the hell? This landlord is a friend. He locks you into a One-Year contract with few ways to get out of it? That is completely bullstuff.

did you read all of the contract and see if there were any amendments for installations, upkeep, etc? that's basically a surefire win considering the nature of it.

cable is provided by them, I have a verizon Jetpack thing that allows me wifi

Afaik the owner is the landlord, it's not part of any corporations or the such

Yeah, we've gone back through it, the problem is if the landlord has a better lawyer and somehow we do lose, though very little chance of happening, we'd be utterly screwed

Ad Bot always knows what to say

Put up with it until the contract expires?

Put up with it until the contract expires?
well I view it this way, one that's horrible business practice on my landlords side, and two, if this is the current condition, imagine it in the next 6 months

how does he have a better lawyer?
