Author Topic: I want to join the National Guard or the Coast Guard.  (Read 2230 times)

I have always been interested in helping people out during hurricanes or natural disasters. I know that FEMA is probably a better fit, but I don't know if they have jobs where you're actually helping and rescuing people from hurricanes or natural disasters. Anyways, call it blogland forums if you want, but I was just wondering if anyone here has served in the National Guard or the Coast Guard and some experiences they've had, and if they've worked during hurricane situations.

Even though Im not in the Military I know a pretty good ammount (of course not as much as Bones) about the enlistment process.

I was considering joining the Military but I probably wont be able to join.

I'd join the military, but in terms of overseas warfare or the like I'd rather join the Air Force and be a pilot.

thanks :) not only that, but it'd help me get to college which i'll never be able to afford.

My dad had a friend who was with the National Guard and during Katrina he had the job to rescue tons of animals such as cats, dogs, rabbits, and farm animals as well as regular people. I remember he told me that he did everything by himself and that the flooding was over 6 and a half feet and how he had to be in a row-boat to rescue these animals and people. It was tragic and heart-warming. If you want to join either, go for it. It's an amazing career with lifelong self-rewards.

It's what parents are for.

See, that's what I'd want to do. I have been watching documentaries about Katrina, and it seems so horrible that it'd be amazing to work with those people and saw some lives. :)

I know it is amazing to work with others and save their lives, same with fire-fighters. Fire-fighters are one of the greatest people. If it is what you really want to do in life, you should also ask yourself this: "Am I really up to saving others even if I risk my own life?". Not everyone is equipped for it.

I may not be equipped for it, but it's very important to me.

I'm supposed to be contacted by the marines either this year or next year for enlistment. Of course, I signed the paperwork to be contacted for enlistment long before I got into the relationship with my girlfriend. When they call me up I'm gonna have to reject the enlistment because I now have a reason not to go. :)

Carefully consider your decision. I had to cancel my decision because I have a loving girlfriend who I intend to be with for a long time and it's best not to leave them alone for months at a time and potentially get killed because that'd suck really bad for your future wife. :c

Anyway, just make sure you've given up on any chance at a relationship unless you're one of those people who'd rather wait until they're in their late years to actually give a damn about marriage.

Edit: I do plan to become a firefighter for a while after I turn 21. I don't plan to keep that as a career though.

by the time you will be old enough it will be like righteous slaughter 7

I think you should keep up to the dream of being with a public service like the National Guard or a Coast Guard. I think you are still young and have a lot of time to think about it, but for now it's a great thing to think about what you want to be. Almost all younger people have no idea of what they want to be or acheive in life.

I got a few friends in the airforce national guard. all they do is guard gate shacks all day and watch DVDs.
and they can live at home and bhave normal lives for years while doing it.

sounds like a sweet deal lol

True, but I've always wanted to work with hurricane survivors
