Author Topic: I'm making a server, would like some input before I start working on it.  (Read 5652 times)

Ok, some of you may have seen me around, some of you may remember my failed projects(hopefully not)

I just want to let you all know that I won't give up. I have received a lot of suggestions and helpful input from the forum, as well as experience in hard work and planning. I think it has all been leading up to something, and THIS might be it.

An accurate and fun recreation of Dawn of War in Blockland.

This won't be a mini empires type deal, I now understand Blockland doesn't want that. I do, however, know that you people would like something for sure: something new and simple.

Enough rambling, I will tell you exactly what this server is about now.

The server will basically be a lot like Dawn of War, including upgrade-able squads(weapons), capture points across the map, base upgrades (Vehicle building, Race-special building and Armory so far), classes, all that good stuff. The catch to it, is that you are one of the soldiers in the squads, fighting.

Each round will randomize the scenario, the map you were on before could be the annihilate gamemode(destroy the other team's base and capture points on the battlefield) and the next round could be KOTH, CTF, Space Hulk, and many more gamemodes on a new map. Your team, class, position, and weapons will be randomized. You could be a devastator(heavy) marine and your whole squad would depend on you for support. Randomizing nearly everything will lead to team-dependency, exactly what this game will need. (The squad will also include a boundary so if you try to abandon them, you will die)

This may sound too good/far-fetched/massive to be true, but this time I won't let down my promise, I will work top hour on this(when I'm not busy or asleep) and finally deliver a top-notch Warhammer server like I promised those two times before. I would like some support for this, too. Not in money or such(some addons that would help the game would really help), but just your hope in this server and visible interest would be highly appreciated.

Here are a few things I need from Blockland:

A Space Marine suit(Gravity Cat, I saw it, and you tease me.)

A squad boundary (or how to make it)

Some terrain maps(nothing with too much work into it, could be a slapped together modter and I would be ecstatic)

Some tips

Thanks for reading, if you don't have any of the above your tips and insight would be just as appreciated.

ALSO: some maps I already have (all edited for the DoW usage)

Map made by Bravo, given permission by Bravo and LegoPepper to use

Seeking maker of this map, was an old save on my computer I totally forgot about.

so essentially everythin's randomized

preferably don't add sniper weapons because they're for wimpimos

This looks and sounds really legit so far; you've got my support, not too big on Jalganda Wastelands though. Personally I wouldn't bother finding a squad boundary thing; since, if you abandoned them you would probably get killed off anyways, and auto-killing for being out of range of a squad; sounds like you're blocking players from using certain tactics.

How big would each map have to be to get picked? Would vehicles need to be able to traverse across them?

Haha add this topic to the "Come up with your own ideas" stuff.

He's not asking for an idea for a whole gametype/server; he's asking for advice on something which quite honestly is pretty overwhelming, as well as some add-ons to use; though now he's being more specific.

I've got no issue with this topic, I'm pumped to see how this will turn out actually.

It was still pretty stuffty. Some people get decent ideas from the community.

I think this idea is great.
And remember, you still have HamHost hosting.

is your mission in life to mention hamhosting in every thread relating to users of hamhost

you're the worst hoster ever for the sole reason of not having a ham in your banner

I guess you don't read much.

SkoopDaHoop is pretty inactive on my hosting service, so I was just reminding him that the account exists.

.
It started as an idea, it was a matter of time before I acted on it (I even said I was likely going to make it)
2 + 2

Thanks for the kind words Deadzone, you seem like a really cool guy(and thank you so much for contributing, too!)

1. The point of this being different from a run-around TDM is when you need to be team dependent. If you have an anti vehicle weapon only, what happens when a bunch of soldiers ambush you? You want someone with an assault rifle, maybe an LMG to take on massive hordes of enemies, and that guy needs protection from vehicles who could kill off the rifle men and LMGer with a single shot, so he needs an anti-vehicle soldier, and so on. This helpless dependency that is formed from randomized class and weapons comes to form the squad.

The boundary will keep players from running away from their squad, which server-goers will probably do. It will also keep this potentially good idea from turning into a run-around-a-small-battlefield-and-shoot-people game, and keep it as a "capture points, bulk up your squad, work up together for the larger objective" game.

2. Thank you so much for offering your services! I gratefully accept it.

Not maps that are too big, just a lot of places to go. And spacious for squads and such.

My suggestion is a war-torn city, a little bigger than the afghan map and a little more spacious. But go ahead and do whatever kind of map you want, it will most likely be great either way.

I think this idea is great.

Of course, you have very reliable hosting and service. It would be an insult to not to use Hamhost.

Also, I haven't forgotten, I've been planning a new server since the other one didn't work out.

Also, how could I make it so if you are near a capture point, it starts capping(unless you move - it restarts)?

I would enjoy the help of eventers, too.

As long as it isn't too small; like you could venture off maybe at least 2 64x64 plates before you get a warning.

I was actually thinking a war torn city; either a future metropolis, or a blackened; temple-ruin scattered field. I've got some ideas forming right now actually.

I'm fine with your opinions, but this is just offensive.
