Author Topic: The Weather Thread  (Read 2395 times)

Post pictures/experiences with interesting weather here.  IRL I am a trained weather spotter, and can't find a thread like this, so I decided to create one.

1. My very best picture, taken June 25, 2011 from the back door of my house.  A mammatus formation from a tornadic storm that passed through with a sunset shining in.

2. A roll cloud, taken on July 12, 2011.  I took this while standing on the driveway.

3. My scariest picture.  You know how the sky is green when a "tornadic" storm comes through?  This picture is not edited in any way!  Green skies actually mean a heavy hail concentration in the storm, which fell during the storm.  This picture was taken from the same place as Picture #1.

4. I did not take this picture.  This is a cumulonimbus incus picture that actually gave me shivers when I was little.

5. I took this picture in Bowling Green, Kentucky in April 2012.  A perfect single-celled severe thunderstorm.

6. The storm that destroyed Joplin by the time it reached my house as a tornadic squall line.

7. A flat-based cloud that had little more than a few raindrops, but still looks cool.

8. A severe thunderstorm with near-black clouds.

I'm in California for now so I don't get many storms.

I took a tour of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/ National Weather Service location in Brookhaven National Lab last month. Got to see their facility, the doppler radar, weather balloon launch, etc. I can post pictures if you want

Rain.

Philippines isn't really one for diversity, it's either ridiculously hot or really heavy rain. That's all we get. The most impressive one so far is Ondoy in which the rain just kept on pouring for days on end with little to no breaks. But it kinda inconvenienced too many people at that time so.

yes

Some of these pictures look great, but why are some at a very small resolution?

I took a tour of the NWS near St Louis.  In the middle of the tour, I passed out and crashed into a window.  When I woke up, there were like 20 people, including my parents, over me.  I was like, "Oh......crap."  Turns out I had heat exhaustion.

I went through Hurricane Sandy, and one night when it hit I was asleep and then the next morning I woke up; the street outside was completely flooded, it was crazy.

Once I get my license (might have to wait until spring, since I'll get more success), I'm going storm chasing.  I only need like six more hours of driving to get my license.

Arizona.
AKA: No rain allowed

it's been raining a lot around chi-town but it's nothing terribly exciting yet

fires everywhere around me right now
