Author Topic: Would it be wise to change Explorerframe.dll  (Read 1926 times)

So i'm trying to change a my windows 7 to a windows 8 look, like the colours and the buttons

(The ones at the top right of the page.) so I downloaded this pack - http://mare-m.deviantart.com/art/Windows-8-8-1-Theme-for-Windows-7-318932206

it's entirely legit, I changed the fonts and stuff but the last thing needed to change is the explorerframe.dll
and I am kind of sketchy about changing it. I'd like to not forget up my computer.

Would this be safe?
Also I am running windows 32 bit, window 8 black theme, and it's home premium version.

As long as you do it right, it'll be fine.

so -
getting full control over explorerframe.dll, then changing it with the one in the file?

Yes.

I have a full Windows 7 re-skin installed, and it worked fine.

As long as that DLL supports 32 bit, sure. I changed mine to get a sleek, more squared look that's become popular lately.
You'll need to disable Windows File Protection or whatever it's called to replace a running file, though.

Just assuming it goes wrong, what would I do?

Just make sure you make a backup of the original, and if anything goes wrong, you can Win+C up a command line and copy the file right back.

Just make a backup of any .dll you replace, so if it goes wrong, you can replace it.

Explorer wouldn't start, so you-

Dangit Kingdaro.

Sure it's safe. It seems like it's mostly a resource dll holding images etc. Just make a backup in case anything goes wrong (pretty sure it wont).

Yeah I did it and it's done, cool but the thing is it didn't change the x button in the corner or the minimize and stuff. Is there a dll I need to replace for that too?

A while ago, I was changing my Windows 8 to look like Windows 7.
I'm wondering why anyone would like the Windows 8 theme, it's way too simple and ugly.

I like the start button, the back and forward button and the minimize, window, and close buttons. They look really nice.

also it boots up a few seconds longer than usual with the explorerframe changed, like it logs in then it doesn't load the desktop for like 7 seconds. it used to be like 2 seconds wait.

I guess it would fix over time?

edit: It wouldn't affect it actually, all I did was replace the image.

I'd still like to know how to change the minimize, window and close buttons.
