i want to setup a connection with a Windows XP computer and a Windows 98 computer. i want to transfer files between the two computers using a direct connection with an ethernet cable.
i have a crossover cable and both computers have ports

I think it's pretty simple but you need to change a few settings for it to work properly.

I know how to do it between two Windows 7 systems.

Like Kalphiter said, there probably isn't a very easy way to do it. You might be able to install software on one of the computers to emulate a router (which makes a local network), then you can set up an FTP server on one of the computers and connect to it through the other computer.
