Pop Icons*.
John and George wrote some of their best songs on their own, under their own name (IE: Imagine). Paul tried to continue on with Wings (and was ultimately unsuccessful) after the band broke up and Ringo went on to do his own work.
They were not extremely talented, they more or less would have all together matched the talents of more modern pop icons (IE "One Direction", Justin Bieber, etc). They also, in reality, all hated each other.
Their main reason for fame and success was the uprising of the young, four-boy British bands, their good looks, and their simplistic pop-era love songs.
In no way am I calling them bad musicians. In no way am I insulting them; they're a great group. But I would not consider them legendary artists, but more legendary icons.
