Author Topic: Job interview - Successful  (Read 2639 times)

I have a job interview in an hour for a part-time cashier job at a large supermarket.

I'm kind of nervous about the interview. I have to answer a questionnaire and have a one-to-one interview.
I'm not so nervous about those, but rather whether I get the job or not. I don't want to not get it, as I know I can do the job. But I've not gotten previous similar jobs before, and like those times, competition for the position is high.

And if I do get the job I'm also nervous about it, as I feel really nervous working on a till with a constant stream of customers, and it being my first job.

Anyone else applying to any jobs, or had tips or tricks for getting.over nerves and doing well in interviews?
Also does anyone else work tills at a supermarket? What's it like for you?

Experience? No. But don't think of it as any different than just holding a conversation with someone. Make eye contact, shake hands firmly, and remember:

Most employers make an initial decision when you walk through the door. They learn a lot about your character in those first few seconds count!

If you still seem nervous during the interview and the interviewer notices, simply inform him that this is your first job interview, so you're a bit nervous. There's a very good chance he'll understand the way you feel, as he most likely went through the same thing at some point in life.

Best of luck!

Don't studder and always look sure of yourself.

Just be calm. Don't freak out.
If he's strict, don't make any jokes to try and make him like you.

I'm generally fine at greeting and talking to my interviewer, who will be a woman. It tends to be when I'm asked questions about my experience, as I have no work experience. And so far all of my interviews have asked me questions about store policy, despite me never having been taught their policies as I don't work for them. I think my gut will get over it. I just hate how I always end up feeling like an idiot because I don't have any work experience.

Thank you for the well wishes and advice though guys. It means a lot, even if just to calm my nerves.

How much research have you done about them and the position?

Well, everyone's gotta start somewhere, right?

Working checkout at a large national supermarket where my dad works full time so I know all about the shop and role.
Not so much their complex and large staff policies.

Definitely. But that's the paradox. I need a job to get work experience, hut every job asks for experience to begin with.

Speak loud and clearly, being too quite or murmuring answers doesn't earn you any points.
Though I've never been in an actual job interview, my current job now I just went in, said I wanted a job, gave the guy my number and he called me up to work 2 days later.

Always be positive and focused and you will be rewarded at almost any job.

I hope the interview is going well and your stomach isn't in your throat right now. :P

When I was asked about experience at the interview for my current (and first) job, I basically said "I don't have any, but I'm always looking for new experiences"

The interview for my first job's interview was kind of a joke honestly, asking about experience was the only "job interview-y" question I was asked. Everything else was just getting to know me, then he told me what position they had for me, asked me if I wanted it, and set me up for drug testing.

Well, the interview went alright. There was actually hardly any questioning about me or experience and such.

The grueling part wad the crappy test dvd.
I had to prove I can multiply five by ten, as well as spot someone stealing alcohol and make sure I know its bad to steal from shops.

So its actually been one of the nicest interviews I've had.
Now I just have the nerves of if I have the job or not, and if I really want it.
I'll find out in a couple days.

Thank you all for the advice and wishes!
Feel free to continue discussing your own job interview and work experiences.

"Sir I understand that you have absolutely no space training of any sort and you are completely illiterate, but you were so positive and focused throughout this interview so congrats you're now an astronaut"
Most jobs...
