Author Topic: Rant about handicapped spaces and non-disable people who use them.  (Read 2147 times)

So, I was in a Wendy's parking lot today, and three people parked in handicapped spots, each with a handicap sign in their vehicle. So, nothing unusual or wrong about this, right? Well, every single one of them got out of their cars just fine and walked up to the door. Now, there obviously are exceptions, such as when a family member who is not a driver needs a handicap spot. But if it's just you getting out of the car, go park in a regular parking spot! There may come along a person who really needs that spot, and if people who don't need it are using the spot, well, then that disabled person is going to have to park in a regular spot. This is just wrong, and I think people who don't really need the handicap thing are getting it just so they can get a good parking spot.

So yeah, discuss opinions on this or times when you have experienced people being inconsiderate to actually disabled people.

I don't think so if you have a handicap license plate/handicap sign on your mirror.

If I had a handicap sign on my mirror I would definitely take advantage of those spaces.

Y'know, handicapped doesn't just mean they can't walk? I know people who've had a handicap yet they could walk and such. You can't just look at someone and think "That person has nothing wrong with them"

Pretty much this, not every handicapped person is in a wheel chair.

Also I would use a family members handicap parking pass without feeling any sort of guilt. I have never seen a parking lot that had no handicapped spots available.

I went to Bloomingdales today with a friend, and she is handicapped because of her back among other things, and the disabled parking spots were filled with selfish individuals who weren't disabled in the spots. They should be fined $500 or more, it's just morally incorrect to park in a handicapped spot when you aren't disabled -- and especially when someone actually needs it for safety priorities.

someone explain to me
why should handicapped people get like, their own parking space
i mean as long as they can drive the same as everyone else why do they need their own parking space

Many old people who can barely walk need space between the car in order to get around to avoid tripping or falling. Many people in wheelchairs also need it too.

but why not just have wheelchairs?

Because when you have a muscle disorder where your muscles are deteriorating and you have a hard time moving around, it'd be very helpful to have a spot closest to the door. It has nothing to do with your ability to drive.

EDIT:
but why not just have wheelchairs?
Because sometimes wheelchairs are not practical/the condition is not bad enough for that.

but why not just have wheelchairs?
because not everyone lives two minutes away from a store

In my Driver's book, it said "Don't use a disabled person's marker if they (or anyone else disabled) are not in the car."  However, I don't think anyone makes a big deal about it.  It'd also be hard to catch them too.
