I'm trying to get a server going so I can do some multiplayer survival on Minecraft with someone.

First off, I tried LAN. It didn't work. It probably had something to do with the fact that one of the computers was a wireless connected laptop and the other was a wired desktop computer. It had worked before when we did it with two laptops, but one of them is really slow and not even worth playing on.

Now, I have gotten a server going on the desktop computer by using the server download link on Minecraft.net. I have all the settings dealt with and have it running. When I go to multiplayer on the desktop computer and add the server with its ip, it pops up like it should. It has full green bars and I can join it and play on the desktop computer.

However, when I put the exact same ip in on the laptop, it can't find it. It keeps searching and it never pops up like on the other computer. The server is definitely up and running because I can connect to it on the desktop computer.

We tried turning off the firewall on the laptop, but the server still didn't appear.

Could someone help me out here?

Need hamachi to do it, I believe. There are many great videos on Youtube, just search up "how to make a minecraft hamachi server".

And I think this belongs in Games

Are you using the external ip of the server and the right port, along with port forwarding the port?

NEVER USE FREAKING HAMACHI

Hamachi is never required for making any sort of server. Don't use it.

Why? I use it and it works great!

Hamachi is only a pain in the ass work around for port forwarding.
Just forward your ports and forget about it. No extra software needed.

It connects to the server on the computer its hosted on because its a local connection and will always work. You need to port forward on your desktop in order for others to connect.

Go to your router page. Port forward.

Go to CMD and type ipconfig. Scroll up until you see what is called IPv4 on the first image. Then go to your port forward page and put whatever that number is in that little box that is circled on the second image.

Profit.

ALSO, go to ipchicken.com and make sure you are using the correct external IP address.

port forward would be so god damn easy if i just knew the login and password

I thought my port was forwarded. It's 25565 or something like that.

did you do anything I just wrote

Step One: Install minecraft server and throw it into a folder.

Step Two: Start the server, a bunch of files should be added to the folder.

Step Three: Go to "server.properties". Open it up with a notepad or something. Remember the "server-port" variable, and change your "server-ip" variable to ... wait for step four...

Step Four: Go on google and search "external ip". Copy it down on the "server-ip" variable.

Step Five: Run the server, and give the people who you want to join the port and external ip!

Don't change the IP in the properties file.
