They said something about it in a blog post, apparently increasing the city sizes would create more UIs (cars, power, etc) and would break the engine.
Like there isn't enough already when you have skyscrapers littering your already cramped city.

Haha, what I just do to make up for the space is have an industrial city (also helps with pollution), and smaller "residential cities" feeding off of the industrial city.
