I'd recommend a frigate. The Frigates are fast and maneuverable, it has shotguns that are easy to aim and drones to distract enemy turrets. It's not as fast and maneuverable as a fighter, but you won't have to worry about being utterly obliterated when somebody lands a shot on you.
