How the hell do I use the pen tool in PS?

I have Photoshop CS6, and I cannot figure out this pen tool for the life of me, it morphs into weird stuff when i'm just trying to angle it.

The pen tool creates paths. Once it's closed, you can turn the path into a selection, fill the inside of the path into a shape, or stroke the path. I always refer people to this page because it's the same one I learned how to use the tool with.
Most people use it to create vector graphics in Photoshop.
