I have a Kindle Fire HD 8.9 that I put CyanogenMod on. The thing is great (after I got rid of Amazon's horrible OS). Maybe try a Kindle Fire HDX 8.9.

Dell Venue 8 Pro. $299, 8" screen, 32GB flash, 2GB RAM, runs full Windows 8.1 on an x86 processor. Not necessarily the best tablet all-around, but by far the most versatile under $500.
