Anyone who recommends Norton automatically loses all credibility. Might as well as suggest McAfee too.
did you not read op?  Said he was sick of mcafee.

Hey, I don't judge people on their anti-virus, if it works it works, and Norton certainly does.

Did you read my post. I wasn't obviously suggesting McAfee. Please go be handicapped elsewhere.

If you knew what you were talking about then you would certainly know it doesn't. I've made money off of removing viruses and I've done it for free too. Most times I do it the person had Norton or McAfee. Both are garbage and if you think otherwise, you're not computer literate. Simple as that.

Oh so you weren't suggesting mcafee?  Then what does the below quote mean?  Unless I just misunderstood your post.

AVG Free is great and has been doing the job for years with me.
except AVG secure search can go forget off

So if someone told you smoking was healthy and I chimed in "Might as well smoke crack while you're at it then for the full effect." You would take that seriously?
I was saying if he's gonna suggest stuffty anti-virus programs we might as well suggest McAfee.

You could use CCleaner.

Norton 360, or just normal Norton..
You could use CCleaner.

Oh wait, you're actually suggesting that?

Norton sucks, man.

You could use CCleaner.

Last time I checked, CCleaner wasn't a AV.
Also, about the norton thing, unless you always go on high risk sites or stuff (which you should only be doing with a VM or and sandboxie style program, chances are you won't end up with a nasty virus. I still recommend webroot and malwarebytes are secondary layers of protection either as a secondary scanner or AV, since they don't eat up much resources on your computer assuming you own a more recent PC.

If anyone's especially scared about getting viruses and fears their AV just won't cut it, you can block all .exe's from executing in the appdata. (this obviously can block legitimate exe's too, but you can make exceptions too. remember this is no where near a replacement for a AV program nor a significant safety layer as this only blocks certain viruses).
how to block exe's from executing in appdata

I use AVG combined with Malwarebytes.

ok then I just misinterpreted your post.  I thought you were recommending mcafee as a good antivirus.  My bad.

AVG works great for me, and I don't see any problems with it.

I didn't say it worked well....
It works to an extent.
