For some of us if you try to upload a GIF image, no matter what size or scale it will give you an error. Guess you got lucky.

The forums are very picky about avatars, especially gifs, it'll allow them, but it may pester you about it being too big, no matter the file size or resolution

It's tedious but I was able to get mine to work...

use CTRL-F5 to completely refresh the page cache if you don't see a change in your avatar immediately

and make sure it's well within the size restraints, don't make it borderline just to squeeze every last bit of quality out of it.

we updated to a new system
avatars are now all stored under the same url so most browsers have caches that store that image instead of downloading it every time
gifs work for me
