We quickly land in a forested area, and I make the repairs... we probably won't have enough fuel for the trip back home, but it would be 2 miles or so off target.

helicopter mechanics aren't "basic"
they're actually pretty damn complicated
your character wouldn't even know where the fuel tank is, let alone how to fly the thing. you most likely would only have recieved training in jets
no helicopters
