hi! welcome to the forums lil guy. i hope you enjoy your stay here :>

to change your avatar you need to first have a 75x75 jpeg or png file (gif if you're feeling really fancy). you click the profile button up at the top of the page and look under the box on the side that says "modify profile." from there you'll click on "forum profile information." the space you want is this:



make sure that "i will upload my own picture" is selected and then click the "browse..." button. now you just open up the image you want to use for your avatar, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click "change profile." sometimes it takes a while for it to update, so don't panic if you don't see results immediately.
it takes a while sometimes and it has to be 75x75


also, as boink said, we usually call them "threads" or "topics" instead of files.

also as a little note, sometimes some users can be pretty hostile to people who are new and/or aren't sure what they're doing. my best advice for being here is don't take insults or things like that personally.
